Breast Cancer Screening Options Improve Significantly for Methodist Hospitals of NW Indiana Patients

AXS Imaging customer is first Indiana health system to get newly FDA approved 3D technology

Beginning mid-summer 2011, patients who undergo routine mammograms at Methodist Hospitals of Northwest Indiana located in Merrillville and Gary will have the latest screening and diagnostic technology available. Methodist Hospitals of Northwest Indiana is the first healthcare system in Indiana to offer 3D breast tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening with a Hologic Selenia® Dimensions® digital mammography system which the hospital network purchased from AXS Imaging.

“By offering women the latest technology in mammography, Methodist Hospitals hopes to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened.” said Ian McFadden, CEO of Methodist Hospitals, “This investment is the latest example of our commitment to deliver the highest quality patient care.”

Primarily used in 3-D mammography, the tomography process creates a three dimensional view of the breast that the doctors can examine in a virtual environment. It allows the radiologist to view the breast in 1 mm increments providing better visualization by decreasing overlapping tissue which can hide cancers. By using this revolutionary procedure, suspected masses and micro-calcifications can be detected with a higher degree of accuracy, providing earlier detection of breast cancer.

“Working with progressive sites like Methodist Hospitals, AXS Imaging, can help improve patient outcomes by providing leading edge technology to hospitals in the Midwest. This will allow these facilities to stay competitive in the 21st century”, states Pete Davis, CEO of AXS Imaging.
